In 1979, St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. and Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China united as sister cities in order to promote understanding and friendship among two peoples and to strengthen the friendly relationships of two cities.
The St. Louis-Nanjing Sister City Committee was formed as a not-for-profit organization in 1980. The purposes of the Committee are
- To assist the City of St. Louis in the performance of its sister city agreement with the city of Nanjing, China.
- To promote world peace, international understanding, friendship, cooperation, tolerance, cultural awareness and respect for diversity.
- To bring about the greatest possible amount of direct, meaningful, and mutually satisfying personal contacts between the people of Nanjing and St. Louis.
- To provide a vehicle for the exchange, on a regular basis, between Nanjing and St. Louis, of people, ideas and information in the fields of education. culture, art. trade, economy, sports, science and technology, and municipal administration and urban development.
